Overview
In 1811, Vasily Golovnin, the captain of the Russian sloop Diana, who was surveying the Kuril Islands, was captured by Japanese guards on Kunashiri Island and interned in Japan for two years and three months. The case was solved thanks to the efforts of Pyotr Ricord, the sub-captain of the Diana, and TAKATAYA Kachi, the captain of a Japanese merchant ship who was captured by Ricord and taken to Kamchatka. The case became widely known through Golovnin's book “Memoirs of a Captivity in Japan during the Years 1811, 1812 and 1813 with observations on the country and the people” in Europe.
